In a statement released May 18, Cardinal Newman High School announced that Marikay “Katie” Gomez Kervi will be serving as principal of the high school starting July 2020.
The current principal, Dr. Christine Higgins, will be leaving the school at the end of the current school year. The statement expressed that “Dr. Higgins will be missed…the diocese and all here at Cardinal Newman High School are grateful for her outstanding leadership and faith-filled dedication.”
Kervi was selected after a rigorous search for a candidate to fill the role of principal. Kervi, who graduated from Cardinal Newman in 1999, earned a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of South Carolina. In 2008, she completed a Master of Science in Education from Walden University. Kervi returned to Cardinal Newman in 2005, and held several positions: Speech and Journalism teacher, registrar, and dean of students. Since 2013, Kervi has served as principal of St. Juliana Catholic School in West Palm Beach.
“Cardinal Newman has always been home to me,” said Kervi. “It has provided me with an education, a strong foundation in my faith and a community that has always been more like family. It is truly a privilege to return to the school that helped form me into the person I am today. I am blessed to have spent the last seven years at St. Juliana School where my children have started, and will continue, their journey in Catholic education. It is a blessing and my privilege to continue serving our community at Cardinal Newman High School.”
In the statement released by school administrators, Brother Thomas Zoppa, FSC, interim president, remarked, “Through the interview process it was evident that her leadership would strengthen our academic program; focus on our mission as a Catholic school; emphasize communication with faculty, families and students; and assist with marketing the school to our feeder schools, and the greater community.”
